COVID-19 and fertility treatment – an update
We sure have been on a bit of a whirlwind when it comes to elective surgery, in particular fertility treatment. However, we are very pleased to see that IVF treatments can now re-commence, and those wishing to start a family can do so!
Firstly we should note that in regards to safety for both mother and baby, there is currently a lack of evidence suggesting that it is unsafe to be pregnant in this current climate. If this is of concern to you, please contact your health care team and seek their advice – chances are they will help relieve some of your anxieties.
Fertility treatment update:
On March 25, 2020 our Australian Government announced a pause on elective surgery, which included IVF.
On April 21, 2020 the Government gave IVF the go ahead once again, due to all the hard work Australians are doing to flatten the curve - well done to each and every one of us!
Obviously we all need to continue being vigilant, practicing good hygiene and abiding by the recommendations from our Government. As we know with this virus, things can change within a matter of hours.
With that exciting news in place, we thought it would only be fitting to provide you with some tips to optimise your diet, not only for fertility but also prior to undertaking IVF.
How can we optimise our nutrition for fertility?
We have a large (and growing) body of evidence expressing the importance of nutrition for both fertility and pregnancy. What we eat can have an impact on our ability to ovulate, the health of our eggs and sperm, and so much more. Now is a great time to get on top of your nutrition (while also looking after your mental health).
Here are 3 of our top fertility nutrition tips:
Maintain a healthy weight – ideally in the 12 months leading up to conception. This can have a lasting impact on the health of your eggs, and ability to ovulate. Book in with us to have a chat with us, as this looks completely different for everyone.
Start taking your prenatal supplement now! These supplements contain very important nutrients that not only enhance the health of your eggs and increase chances of ovulation, but also ensure your stores are topped up. Nutrients to look out for are folate (or folic acid), omega-3 fatty acids, zinc and more. Note: there is not one prenatal supplement that is right for everyone, get in contact with your Dietitian to find the best one for you.
Follow a Mediterranean style diet (this is NOT a diet – we promise). What this means is to eat foods rich in wholegrains (including loads of fibre), fruit and vegetables, healthy fats (like extra virgin olive oil and omega-3 fatty acids) and enjoy your favourite foods from time to time. Remove restrictions and be kind to yourself during these uncertain times.
